The University of Nevada, Reno will unveil a statue of one of the University's acclaimed and admired alumni, former U.S. Senator Richard H. Bryan, and join other dignitaries in dedicating the Richard H. Bryan Plaza at 4 p.m., Friday, April 29. The unveiling will be held at the south side of the William N. Pennington Student Achievement Center.
The Richard H. Bryan Plaza will be at the heart of campus in an area highly frequented by students, faculty, staff and campus guests, located between Lincoln Hall and the Mackay Mines Building and in close proximity to the new student achievement center. The project includes a diagonal sidewalk leading from the University's historic Quad to the statue.
Before unveiling the Bryan statue, only one other statue stood watch over the University's campus and that is of silver magnate and University benefactor John Mackay. Senator Bryan, class of 1959, is the only graduate of the University to have been elected student body president, elected to the Nevada State Assembly and the Nevada State Senate, elected Attorney General of Nevada, elected Governor of Nevada and elected U.S. Senator from Nevada.
"To recognize Senator Bryan's significant contributions to our campus, our state and our country over the past 60 years, we are proud to dedicate the Richard H. Bryan Plaza and the statue of Senator Bryan so that future generations of students can be inspired to the highest levels of their potential," President Johnson said.
The sculptor of this statue, Benjamin Victor, is the same artist who created the Sarah Winnemucca statue that represents Nevada in Statuary Hall in the United States Capitol. The cost of the Bryan statue and its installation is made possible by generous support from Senator Bryan's friends and University benefactors.
The public is welcome to attend the dedication and unveiling. Limited parking is available on the top floor of the Brian J. Whalen Parking Complex located on North Virginia Street, and permit dispensers are located on the first floor for additional parking.
The University continues to welcome support for the Richard H. Bryan Plaza and the Richard H. and Bonnie B. Bryan Scholarship Endowment. Gifts may be made to the University of Nevada, Reno Foundation at 1664 N. Virginia St., Mail Stop 0162, Reno, Nevada, 89557, and online at https://supportnevada.unr.edu/SenatorBryanPlaza.
