Texting, tweeting, sharing, commenting, liking and swiping are constant activities in a student's daily routine. Now that Polices Services at the University of Nevada, Reno have launched a mobile safety app, students won't have to look beyond their smartphone for safety resources on campus.
SafePack is the mobile app that gives users access to campus information and personal safety tools.
Todd Renwick, University Police Service commander, said Police Services saw the app as another way to provide all the tools and resources possible for students and staff.
"This app allows mobile access to police services," Renwick said. "It puts the students and staff in closer contact with us."
The SafePack app includes links for campus map downloads, emergency contacts, emergency plans, report a tip, safe ride access and police and support services. It also includes a personal safety toolbox with a flashlight, an alarm, personal safety tips and the University's network of emergency "blue light" phones.
The SafePack app was designed to complement ongoing efforts by Police Services and the University in promoting campus safety.
• Stationed throughout the main campus and in the Redfield Campus parking lot, "blue light" phones allow quick access to "911" emergency assistance.
• An Emergency Alert System sends an emergency text and email message to all students, faculty and staff in the event of an emergency or unexpected closing at the University.
• An outdoor notification system sends an audible tone, alert or siren across campus in the event of an emergency.
• The University offers a campus escort service which provides a safe transportation option and the Student Cadets offer free rides around campus.
• Free safety classes are offered for self-defense, rape defense and personal safety-awareness instruction.
• A team of professional counselors is committed to promoting student safety and empowerment through training, education and support in personal safety and sexual assault prevention.
• A 24-hour Sexual Assault/Sexual Misconduct Hotline allowing students, faculty and staff to report incidents that occur on or off campus. The caller may remain anonymous if he/she chooses. The hotline phone number is 775-784-1030.
SafePack is now available in the App Store and Google Play.
