Given its location nestled near the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, the University campus offers a perfect "jumping-off" point into northern Nevada and the surrounding area to what has been dubbed "America's Adventure Place" by travel writers throughout the country. Just four blocks from downtown Reno, a 45-minute drive from scenic Lake Tahoe and less than a four-hour drive from San Francisco, the University is near a multitude of outdoor, recreation, arts and culture opportunities.

The City of Reno's Truckee River Whitewater Park is located in the heart of downtown Reno, about one mile from campus. It features 11 pools for kayak play as well as a kayak racing course. It plays host to the annual Reno River Festival, one of the country¹s premier competitive kayak events.

The University is about a 45-minute drive away from more than a dozen world-class ski resorts, including Squaw Valley, home to the 1960 Winter Olympic Games. Sierra ski resorts have received more than 880 inches of fresh powder in a single season, making them some of the best in the world.
The region boasts a myriad of large, annual festivals and events including Hot August Nights (classic car festival), the Great Reno (hot air) Balloon Race, the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off and the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival.
